Sporting Myths 1: Parents are the enemy!
For a long time parents have been treated as the “enemy” in the sports industry.
One of the jokes in the coaching community for some time has been that the idea that a coaching “nirvana”would be to have exclusive coaching rights to a world class sports facility built right next door to the world’s largest orphanage!
However, parents are critically important to sport – now – more than ever.
Firstly, the majority of people who actually deliver sport are amateur, part time, first time coaches and officials – i.e. the parents of kids who are playing sport. The majority of the sports industry workforce are in fact sporting parents.
Second, helping kids to learn to love competitive sport is a partnership: coaches, athletes and parents working together as a team.
In that partnership coaches – simply – coach.
Athletes give the best they can give to their training and competition.
But the job of a parent is far greater and more important than we’ve ever realized. Parents help to develop values. To nurture virtues. To love, value and accept their children for no reason other than they are their children. To teach life-lessons like time management, self-responsibility and accountability. To do all the practical stuff…pay the bills, drive the kids to training, purchase and cook healthy food….and many many other things.
When it comes down to it, sport can not exist without sporting parents…so why not engage with them and embrace them as key partners in the sports experience?
Myth Buster Solution: Invest in sporting parent education and training. Embrace parents as key deliverers and providers of the sports experience.
Parents are the key to growing sport in the future.
Parents are partners in helping kids to realize their potential…in sport and in life.

8 Things Daughters Need from Their Sports Dads
Sports dads do not all do things the same way. Studies show that many of them are “softies” when it comes to their girls. But youth sports also shows us that many of them are very hard on their girls.
A few weeks ago, a dadon my daughter’s varsity softball team (she’s one of the coaches) harshly made his daughter practice her pitching immediately after her team had lost a game pretty badly. As he pushed her to practice, she was in tears.
What makes a sports dad do this? I’m sure the dad loves his daughter, and wants the best for her, but he’s obviously got a twisted view of how to express that love.
If you’re a sports dad of a daughter, here’s the kind of love your daughter needs you to show her, here’s what she needs from you:
- Your unconditional love. Your daughter will make mistakes, disappoint you, and maybe even seem to dislike you for a season, but don’t let her question your love for her. Tell her this often, even if she doesn’t respond.
- Your unwavering belief in her. Even when she doesn’t play her best, she needs to know that you still belief in her, that you still believe she has the capability, that one bad game, or even several bad games do not define her as an athlete.
- Your tough love. As one sports dad puts it, “Teach her how to do a real push up.” Challenge her to be her best, to work harder, and then show her how it’s done. My husband introduced my two athlete daughters to the weight room and instilled in them the need for hard work. And it shows: today, as young adults in their careers, they are both avid and competitive cross-fitters.
- Your physical presence. As much as you can, be at her games. I knew one dad who went to all of his sons’ games and rarely made it to his daughter’s. What kind of message does that send? Your presence–minus the sideline coaching–communicates your support for her and what she loves to do.
- Your personal attention. For almost 30 years, my husband has made it a practice to date his two daughters. And he’s still doing it, even though they are 24 and 30, and one is married. Dating your daughter shows her how she should be treated. It doesn’t have to be expensive. It can be a bike ride together, or a trip for an icee or frozen yogurt.
- Your protection, but not your micro-managing. Your daughter should always know that Dad is there to protect her if anyone should try to hurt or harm her. But she does not need you to micro-manage her friendships, relationships with her coaches and her sports battles.
- Your help when she asks. When she comes with a problem she’s having in sports, or when she can’t figure out her hitting struggles and she asks for your help, give her the help she needs. Make it a priority! But let her come to you; don’t make it a habit to coach her in the car, at home, or at dinner, when she doesn’t ask.
- Your daddy’s heart. Recent studies state that girls who share a bond with their father are emotionally and physically healthier than those girls who don’t. A healthy relationship between Dad and daughter will have a huge impact on a young girl’s entire life. There’s nothing wrong with being a “daddy’s girl”; we have two of them in our house!

Η έρευνα για έναν καλό αθλητικό σύλλογο αξίζει τον κόπο,αφού μακροπρόθεσμα θα οφεληθούν και το παιδί και η οικογένεια.Καλό θα είναι λοιπόν οι γονείς πριν την απόφαση της εγγραφής, να θέσουν τα παρακάτω ερωτήματα: 1.Είναι διπλωματούχοι οι προπονητές;Έχουν την απαιτούμενη εμπειρία;(ΔΙΑΒΑΣΤΕ ΤΗΝ ΙΣΤΟΡΙΑ ΤΟΥ JOHNNY) 2.Ο ίσος χρόνος συμμετοχής του κάθε παιδιού αποτελεί αρχή του συλλόγου; 3.Δίνεται σημασία στην ανάπτυξη των τεχνικών επιδεξιοτήτων του αθλήματος; 4.Τηρούν οι χώροι άθλησης της προδιαγραφές ασφαλείας;Συντηρούνται καλά; 5.Ποιά είναι η αναλογία μεταξύ προπονήσεων και αγώνων;Οι 3 ή 4 προπονήσεις ανά αγώνα είναι η κατάλληλη αναλογία για τα μικρά παιδιά. 6.Η κατανομή σε ομάδες εγγυάται την ασφάλεια και την ψυχαγωγία των παιδιών; 7.Δίνονται πολλές ευκαιρίες στα παιδιά να συμμετάσχουν; 8.Ενθαρρύνονται και επαινούνται τα παιδιά για τις προσπάθειές τους; 9.Λαμβάνονται υπόψη οι ανάγκες των παιδιών;Γίνονται για παράδειγμα οι προπονήσεις σε βολικές ώρες;Η διάρκειά τους είναι λογική;Υπάρχει περίπτωση οι χρονικές απαιτήσεις να εμποδίσουν τα παιδιά από το να συμμετάσχουν σε άλλες δραστηριότητες και να αναλάβουν άλλες ευθύνες; 10.Τηρούνται οι κανόνες ασφάλειας κατά τη διάρκεια των προπονήσεων και των αγώνων;Κατανέμονται τα παιδιά σε ομάδες,ανάλογα με το σωματικό τους μέγεθος,το επίπεδο ικανότητας και ωριμότητας;
ΓΙΑΤΙ ΘΑ ΠΡΕΠΕΙ ΝΑ ΕΓΓΡΑΨΕΤΕ ΤΟ ΠΑΙΔΙ ΣΑΣ ΣΕ ΜΙΑ ΑΘΛΗΤΙΚΗ ΑΚΑΔΗΜΙΑ ;

The following protocols provide guidance to those working with children by outlining good practice and establishing boundaries
in a range of situations. The intention of these protocols is to reduce the likelihood of harm to a child, as well as minimising the
risk of an allegation or complaint being made.
GUIDELINES FOR WORKING WITH CHILDREN
1.
Activities should
be appropriate
for the age and
development of
the children
2.
Avoid private or
unobserved situations,
including being alone
with a child in the
changing rooms. Have
another adult present or
at least another player

Travelling creates
higher-risk
environments. Take
extra care to ensure
players and volunteers
are not exposed to
undue risk
5.
When entering changing
rooms, ensure that you
knock and announce
yourself and try to have
at least one other adult
with you

Avoid driving a child
unaccompanied. If this is
not practical, have them
sit in the back seat
7.
Do not invite or
encourage children to
your home
8.
Exercise
common sense
9.
Do not send
children off to
train alone and
out of sight or

Use positive and age appropriate
language
when talking to or
in the presence of
children
19.
Create a safe and
open environment
that also reduces
risk to staff and
volunteer
APPLY A CHILD-CENTRED APPROACH WHERE ALL CHILDREN ARE
TREATED EQUALLY AND WITH DIGNITY
AVOIDING SITUATIONS WHERE YOU ARE ALONE WITH A CHILD
Sporting Myths 2: Coach education has improved coaching.
What’s one of the biggest problems in sport around the world right now?
A lack of quality coaches at all levels of sport!
Coaches who can connect with kids and families.
Coaches who can create and grow enjoyable, engaging, entertaining and effective coaching environments and quality learning experiences.
Coaches who can inspire young athletes to achieve remarkable things.
Wait a minute…..
There’s a real lack of of quality coaches around the world BUT…
Almost every nation – every sporting federation – every sporting organization in the world has a coach education program??!!!
Coach education to this point has not produced better coaches.
We’ve got plenty of coaches who can hold a stop watch.
Lots of coaches who can write a nice, neat periodized plan.
Many, many coaches who can spell A.T.P. and say “proprioceptive neuro-muscular facilitation” backwards.
But, in terms of coaches who can actually coach – we’ve (and I include myself) failed.
It’s time to change the way we develop coaches.
Myth Buster Solution: Scrap the 30-year-old approach to educating coaches. There’s been way too much focus on sports science, periodization and other irrelevant rubbish that has not improved the quality of coaching. Change your coaching courses, coach education resources, coach education assessment processes and focus on continuous improvement, contextual development and coaching coaches to coach.
<<Wayne Goldsmith>>
Sporting Myths 3: Facilities are the key to success.
Every sport – every coach – every sporting organization believes in the old saying “if you build it they will come”.
In other words, people in the sports industry believe that if they have more and better facilities, they’ll attract and retain more participants.
Real Life Experience:
I was recently working with what could only be described as an “awful” coach. No connection with the athletes. Arrived late to training. Took mobile phone calls during training sessions. Drank coffee – including leaving the training environment (and the athletes) to get more coffee. Yelled at the kids. Ignored the parents. The workout was poorly designed and delivered without engagement, energy, enthusiasm or expertise.
When I talked with the coach after the session, I asked them about their coaching and their program and what they thought they needed.
They responded, “A new pool. A much bigger pool and a new gym”.
Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident and it is commonly seen all over the world.
Why?
Because we’re “wired” to invest in things we can see, feel, build and buy. It’s easy to build a new facility. It’s much much harder to build a workforce with the qualities, skills and attributes to deliver outstanding sports experiences to children and families.
Myth Buster Solution: Stop building new facilities until you’ve invested in improving the skills and abilities of the people delivering your sport “at the coalface”.
<<Wayne Goldsmith>>
1)The Pleasure and Participation Model
• Active participation is emphasized
• Participation is the reason for involvement for sport
o The participant and opponent are important
o The opponent is seen as valued and needed
o An opponent is viewed as someone whom participants compete with in order
for a test to take place
• The participant’s control of his or her body and objects in the environment provide
satisfaction
o Skilled movement and performance yield satisfaction
o Demonstrating skill and cunning provides satisfaction
o Domination and victory are not requisites of satisfaction
• Decisions are shared
• Cooperation is desired and expected
• Power is shared
• There is give and take between coaches and athletes
2)The Power and Performance Mode
• Strength, speed and power are emphasized
• Excellence is demonstrated through success
• Success is indicated by winning
• Winning is valued more highly if hard work, dedication, sacrifice, risk, and pain are
evidenced
• The body is viewed as a machine
• Training and performance should be technologically enhanced and scientific
• Participants should not be concerned with injury
• A clear hierarchy of authority structures exists
• Players should be subordinate to coaches
• Coaches are in control
• It should be clear to observers that coaches are in control
• Opponents are viewed as enemies
• Only the best on a team should play
• If you are unskilled, you will cost the team a game and this is unacceptable
